The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) increase voiced termination rates to Nigeria. The new rates represent an increase of over 500% from the previous rate. According to the NCC, the increase is interim and will remain until the conclusion of a study aimed at determining a cost based pricing module for voice termination rates. The increased calling rates have led to mixed reviews from Nigerians in the diaspora. Nigerians in the USA and UK now have to pay more to make calls to friends and family back home.
Most Nigerians in the diaspora initially blamed VOIP companies for the increased rates until recent media releases confirmed that the increase was actually recommended by the nigerian telecommunications authorities. While the increased rates represent over 500% increase in costs, some VOIP operators like Boss Revolution and Otubio have enacted rate policies to ensure their customers get the cheapest call rates to nigeria, available.
